Q: If there was no Renaissance, could there be the Reformation?
A: Strictly speaking, religious reforms or similar things are continuous within Christian society. Before the Renaissance and Reformation, within the Catholic system, similar reform impulses had occurred back and forth several times. They were just not as famous as the Renaissance and Reformation. Thus, people are not very familiar with them, except for the professional people. In fact, the subsequent church organization, the Catholic Church after the eleventh century, was itself a product of such a reform movement. These reform movements had many different details, but there was a basic purpose that everyone followed. They basically believed that the church organization in their time was not good and deviated from the original purpose, restricting in all aspects the freedom of the church, which made it unable to provide the various services it used to provide before. In the end, they had to restore its original purpose and make it more pious. This is what they have in common. Such an event would just happen every now and then. Only before the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the result of these reforms was either the establishment of a group like the Dominican Order, which was still inside the church, a new group that didn't break up with the Catholic Church; or in some way, the mainstream of the Catholic Church absorbed some of their views and enabled the Church itself to achieve reform; or the mainstream of the Catholic Church believed that these reforms were not reliable in themselves, which meant that they should be listed as heresy and be suppressed or excluded. These things happen continuously. I believe that even without the Renaissance or what we call the Protestant Reform, these activities would continue in the original Catholic Church. What was special about the Protestant Reform? It completely undermined the concept of the Christian community and tore the last boundary that everyone was unwilling to touch when arguing. It openly established various separatist churches. This was a feature never seen before. This practice had also caused anti-Reformation within the Catholic Church, which in itself a kind of Reformation.
